beam heath trust manages land north and east of Nantwich - image by Google Maps

Trustees of the Beam Heath Estate are to stage a meeting in June for “hearing claims” from residents in Nantwich.

The “Purpose of Hearing Claims” meeting will be staged at the Parish Hall in Nantwich on Wednesday 24th June between 3pm-4.30pm and between 6pm-7pm.

Trustees say the meeting is for “inhabitant householders resident in the area of the Urban District of Nantwich who claim to be qualified to participate in the distribution of the surplus monies of the Trust and whose claims have not been previously admitted”.

Anyone claiming to be entitled to benefit from Beam Heath should take proof they are householders in the area covered by the trust.

Alternatively, they can take proof they were born in the area by taking a birth certificate which shows the parents’ address at the time.

Or take proof of having previously been a recipient and proof of being a householder again in the area for at least two years.

The Beam Heath is the ancient common lands of Nantwich which lay to the north and east of the town on both sides of the Middlewich Road from the Barony to the Rising Sun Inn.

The heath was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and in local documents over the years.

The framework of the modern Trust was set out in 1557 and was last updated by the Beam Heath Act 1823.

Townspeople of Nantwich were entitled to the income from the land in place of their right to graze their animals on the heath, hence the dividend.

In recent years, the lands and capital funds of the Trust have been added to as a result of the building of the Nantwich bypass and the Sainsbury’s superstore and the Barony Employment Park.

The trustees now manage approximately 600 acres of agricultural land which is let to farming tenants.

The trustees are elected by the Beam Heath recipients and only those entitled to receive the dividend are eligible for election.

Successful claimants will receive the dividend in following years hand-delivered to their home address by the Trust’s distributor.

  1. Town Councillor Riddell Graham says:

The cheques for the Beam Heath benefit are being delivered now. Ths distributor usually calls again if you are not in the first time. If he misses you twice and you have not received a cheque by 23rd June, go to the Claims day (see above) on the 24th.
Not everyone in Nantwich is entitled to the Beam Heath benefit because you need to live within a historical boundary set out in an act of parliament and qualify by living in the town for a certain length of time. Full details are set out on the Nantwich Town Council website. Go to the website, click on the three lines at the top right-hand side, click on ‘community’, then click on Beam Heath Trust. The way to qualify and a list of the streets that qualify are set out there. If you think you are probably entitled, then go to the Claims Day meeting and register. Don’t be shy!
