Jabbin Dabbers and Mayor Kim Jamson

Nantwich resident Kim Jamson is packing a punch as new town mayor as she champions three local charities and plans a major arts festival for children.

Mum-of-two Kim has chosen Cheshire Young Carers, RSPCA Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre and Jabbin Dabbers not-for-profit boxing club on Welsh Row as her Mayor’s charities – all causes close to her heart.

When her children were in their late teens Kim became a volunteer for Cheshire Carers, stood for the council and joined Nantwich Street Angels looking after vulnerable young people out in town at night.

She shares a common interest in bird-watching with her dad and takes great pleasure in seeing the swans on Nantwich lake as she walks her dog Puddle round on a lead and so wishes to support Stapeley Grange which cares for sick and injured wildlife.

Of Jabbin Dabbers, she said: “The club was founded by army veteran Simon Jones to provide a safe, disciplined environment for local children and adults.

“It helps tackle anti-social behaviour, instils confidence and fosters camaraderie. There’s an open doors policy, welcoming everyone, which I particularly love.

“Children and young people have a lot to contend with these days and any organisation that supports them during this time gets the thumbs up from me.”

Kim taught at Highfields Academy for many years and in 2025 she joined six town councillors, all with children of their own, to organise the first Nantwich Youth Arts Festival.

It returns again this July 4 and 5 with a programme of activities including art, drama, craft, pottery, dance and theatrical make-up spreading creativity across town.

The Methodist Church, St Mary’s Church and Nantwich Civic Hall are the main venues and once again there will be an appearance from Strictly Come Dancing stars AJ and Curtis Pritchard.

After a huge turn-out last year, Brookfield Park will host another open air screening – this time Mamma Mia Here We Go Again which is sure to have Nantwich up and dancing.

Helping to organise the event is all part of Kim’s way of ‘giving back’ to the town that captured her heart some 30 years ago.

Originally from Nottingham, she moved to join her husband Geoff Smith who’s worked as a drama teacher at Malbank School for many years.

“Not long after we first met, Geoff brought me to Nantwich and told me this was where he wanted to live so that’s how it happened and we’ve never looked back, she said.

“Both of us had lived in various places over the years but we felt at home immediately in Nantwich and it’s the longest either of us have lived in one place.

“We have raised our two children here and they are proud to be Dabbers!”

And those young Dabbers, now 20 and 22, think it’s ‘pretty cool’ to see their mum her chains of office.

After acting as deputy mayor last year, Cllr Jamson was invested at May’s Nantwich Town Council meeting with John Priest named as her deputy for 2026-27.

Kim, who now works for a teacher trade union, added: “Nantwich has provided me with the chance to put down roots and build a stable, safe and lovely life here with my family and becoming a councillor has allowed me to give something back.

“As I said in my acceptance speech, Nantwich is such a wonderful place to live because of its many volunteers who give freely of their time, unsung heroes who work for the benefit of others, not for social media clicks but for the genuine good of the town and its residents.

“I am proud of Nantwich’s history and believe strongly that our heritage should be maintained and celebrated.

“Nantwich has provided us as a family with so much and it can also do this for new families starting their lives here.

“I would say to any new resident, find something you’re passionate about and come along and join in!”

Kim is looking forward to meeting all the ‘amazing people that make Nantwich such a fantastic place’ and wants everyone to know how truly honoured and humbled she feels to serve as Mayor.
