History was made this week at one of South Cheshire’s best-kept secrets, as the Peacock Railway welcomed visitors for its first-ever Mid-week Running Day, writes Jonathan White.

The miniature railway behind The Peacock Inn in Willaston – run by the South Cheshire Model Engineering Society – offered rides around its picturesque quarter-mile 5-inch gauge track.

The event marked a new chapter for the society, which normally operates at weekends and special occasions.

Railway lovers young and old turned out in droves for an afternoon of steam and smiles.

For £1, visitors enjoyed two laps around the charming track aboard lovingly maintained miniature steam and battery-electric trains.

“We’re thrilled by the turnout,” said one of the society’s volunteers.

“It’s the first time we’ve opened mid-week to the public, and it’s wonderful to see so many enjoying what we do.”

The railway site has become a destination for model engineering fans and families.

Due to the success of the weekday run, more mid-week running days have been scheduled throughout August, alongside the society’s Sunday events.

Upcoming dates include:

•Sunday 3rd August, 12:00–4:00pm – Public Running Day
•Wednesday 6th August, 12:00–4:00pm – Mid-week Running Day
•Wednesday 13th August, 12:00–4:00pm – Mid-week Running Day
