Environment Agency at river weaver in nantwich

Crewe & Nantwich MP Connor Naismith labelled the latest pollution incident in the River Weaver as “totally unacceptable”.

He spoke out after the fifth slurry pollution case in the past three years this week left thousands of fish dead in the river in Nantwich.

Environment Agency teams were called out on Thursday after reports of slurry seen in the river and fish being washed up along the edges near Mill Island and in other areas.

Mr Naismith said: “I am appalled and deeply saddened by yet another pollution incident in the River Weaver which has left thousands of fish dead.

“Our river is a precious part of Nantwich’s heritage and environment. I have written to the Environment Agency demanding a full and urgent investigation and I will be pressing for those responsible to be held to account.

“This cannot be allowed to happen again – our community deserves answers and action.”

He urged any one who sees sign of pollution or fish in distress to contact the Environment Agency on 0800 807060.

Stuart Mitton, of Nantwich Angling Society, said on Thursday that fishing activities have been suspended on the river due to the latest pollution.

And it comes just a few months after the EA re-stocked the river with around 4,000 fish to replace those lost in the pollution cases back in the autumn of 2023.

We contacted the Environment Agency to ask why the source of the pollution has not been found and no prosecutions made.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said in a statement: “Environment Agency officers are investigating a stretch of the River Weaver in Nantwich, where fish have been seen struggling in the water, with some dead fish also observed.

“We are working with our environmental contractors to create oxygen-rich areas where fish in distress can accumulate, with the aim of reducing the number of mortalities. The incident is being investigated to determine the cause.

“We know incidents like this are concerning for the community, and we’ll continue to share updates as more information becomes available.

“Members of the public with any information about this or any other potential pollution incident are asked to contact the Environment Agency’s 24/7 incident hotline on 0800 8070 60.”

  1. Labour dont care one jot about the countryside, soon there will be none left under their plans and Crew & Nantwich labour partys contempt for the electorate is deplorable

  2. I hope, when they get caught (if!!) they are forced to pay the re-stocking costs and compensate all members of the club owning the fishing rights and named and shamed. Why do farmers continue to cut corners, saving money without any comeback. It is criminal and should be treated as such

  3. Cheshire East know which farms are spreading slurry, they have the evidence via pictures etc but don’t have the balls to do anything about it, say it’s nothing to do with them and pass it over to Environmental Agencies, CE don’t want the expense, they’re busy filling the abundant pot holes still!!
The farm is at Hack Green, the farmer won’t pay for the extra slurry to be taken away via containers so spreads it on his land in abundance…. Doesn’t want to pay the removal costs!!
Due to the dry weather, the ground is so dry that it doesn’t absorb into the fields, it just leaks into ditches and waterways.
Sad state of affairs basically and someone needs to be brought to justice for their actions!!

  4. Been going on for years no one ever prosecuted

  5. Nobody has mentioned the dead fish from the incident about five weeks ago. It was reported to the environment agency via the councillors that i contacted, they took photos and contacted everyone who needed to know. This pollution has got to be stopped the farmers involved need to be found and prosecuted.

  6. Who are the polluters ?
