Nantwich Town Women suffered a rare setback as the Dabbers were beaten 2–1 by Runcorn Linnets in the North West Women’s Regional League Division One South.

The defeat came in Nantwich’s final away match of the season at the Apec Taxis Stadium in Runcorn.

Manager Dan Mellor made two changes as the Dabbers looked to finish their away campaign strongly.

The visitors dominated the opening half and deservedly went into the break 1–0 ahead thanks to a goal from defender Katie Naylor.

However, the game turned after the interval when two goals in quick succession allowed Runcorn to snatch the lead and secure all three points.

Mellor felt his side produced a strong performance, saying: “I thought we played well for large parts of the game and created enough chances to get something from it.

“But we didn’t take them and we were punished from two set pieces in a short spell. That’s sometimes the fine margins in football.

“The players kept going and I couldn’t fault their effort. The important thing now is that we regroup and focus on the final game.”

The Dabbers remain top of Division One South with 41 points from 17 matches — recording 13 wins, two draws and just two defeats — and boasting an imposing +54 goal difference.

Only Chester FC Women, currently on 36 points from 16 games, remain in contention to catch them.

Nantwich will now turn their attention to the final fixture of the season when they host Manchester Laces FC at the Swansway Stadium on Sunday 29th March (2pm kick-off).
