Dear Editor,
Council Officers who do not take action in a reasonable time, on reported hazards in their area, like potholes and diseased trees, should go to jail if those hazards result in severe injury or death.
Heavy fines have little impact because they are ultimately paid for by the local Council taxpayers.
In Cheshire East, Chris Hall (pictured), a 48-year-old man was killed when a diseased tree fell upon him.
Cheshire East knew of the perilous condition of this tree for EIGHT YEARS prior to the tragedy!
Then unbelievably they removed 20 plus dangerous trees in the park in the weeks following Chris’s death, again endorsing their level of gross negligence.
Due to the investigations by Health & Safety UK, CEC were prosecuted for systemic gross failings on November 8th 2024 and were fined £500k.
Recently a motorcyclist was killed in Stoke-On-Trent when his motorcycle hit a pothole that had been reported to the council 141 days earlier but the council had failed to repair.
Yours faithfully,
Cllr Brian Silvester
