Thousands of people enjoy Marbury Merry Days (1)

One of South Cheshire’s most cherished country fairs is back this weekend as Marbury Merry Days returns for its 45th year.

The two-day fair, which takes place on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th May, is set in a picturesque field in Marbury, near Wrenbury, with a host of entertainment for all ages.

Headlining this year’s festivities is The Sealed Knot, Europe’s largest re-enactment society, bringing the drama and colour of the English Civil War roaring into life.

Visitors can step straight into the 17th century with a fully immersive living history camp, where reenactors will showcase everything from period cooking and crafts to military drills.

The action continues in the main arena where crowds can expect battle displays with drumbeats, musket fire and cannon blasts.

Saturday will feature large-scale combat scenarios, while Sunday includes marching displays and a special “children’s army”, offering younger visitors the chance to join in the experience.

Beyond the Civil War spectacle, the event boasts a wide variety of attractions.

Visitors can enjoy performances from Pinxton Puppets, a model flying display, classic cars and vintage tractors, and music from the Wirral Pipe Band.

There’s also plenty of traditional fairground fun, including a coconut shy, splat-the-rat, golf putting and a straw bale maze.

Families can browse craft and tea tents, plant and cake stalls, bric-a-brac and book stalls, pre-loved clothing and homeware, plus a tombola and trade stands.

Inside the church, a stunning floral display will be on show throughout the weekend.

Saturday’s highlights include Maypole dancing by Wrenbury School pupils, alongside performances from Glo*s Dance Troupe and the Stafford Morris Dancers.

On Sunday, visitors can enjoy a fun dog show with entries on the day, as well as free antiques valuations in the church, before the weekend rounds off with the Grand Draw.

Gates open at 12.30pm on both days, with a full programme running throughout. Admission is £7.50 for adults, while children under 16 pay £1 – or go free with an accompanying adult. Parking is free.

All proceeds from Marbury Merry Days go towards supporting the upkeep of St Michael & All Angels Parish Church.

A spokesperson for Marbury Merry Days said: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming everyone back for another fantastic weekend.

“It’s a true celebration of community spirit, history and traditional country fair fun — and with so much to see and do, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.”
