A blaze on board a canal barge in Nantwich left one person injured.

Fire crews were called to the incident on the Shropshire Union Canal off Coole Lane, between Nantwich and Audlem.

It happened at around 7.15pm on Sunday (June 28) and two fire engines from Nantwich and Crewe, and one fire engine from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service were called out.

It’s believed the fire was started by an electrical fault on the boat.

A Cheshire Fire spokesperson said: “Firefighters were called to a barge fire in Nantwich.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet, with a covering jet on standby, to tackle the fire externally from the jetty.

“All occupants were accounted for. One casualty, who had suffered smoke inhalation and minor cuts, was assessed by paramedics at the scene.

“Once the fire had been extinguished, firefighters boarded the barge to check for hotspots using a thermal imaging camera.

“Two cylinders involved in the fire were removed and cooled using a hose reel jet. Areas affected by the fire were cut away and checked for signs of fire spread.

“A fire investigation concluded that the cause was believed to be electrical.”
