Thirty-six people have died from COVID-19 virus at Leighton Hospital, latest Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Trust figures today show.

In neighbouring hospital trusts, there have been 38 deaths at Countess Of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and another 21 at East Cheshire Trust in Macclesfield.

And in Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust there have been 29 deaths.

In total, there have been 278 confirmed cases of Coronavirus in Cheshire East area, the figures show. The population for the borough is 380,790.

In neighbouring Cheshire West and Chester, there have been 311 confirmed cases in a population of 340,502.

The figures come as the Government released the full national figures, with another 980 hospital deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 8,958 in the UK.

Government officials said at today’s media briefing that the lockdown was “beginning to pay off” but it was still a “dangerous situation”.

There are now more than 70,000 confirmed cases of the virus across the UK.

A decision is due next week about whether the current “lockdown” will be extended further and for how long.

    After the PM told pubs to close as soon as possible, many of them in Nantwich and beyond defied that order and stayed open, encouraging many people to go for “one last pint”.

    How many caught Coronavirus that evening? How many will die because of that decision?
