Labour councillor Nick Mannion has been re-elected as leader of Cheshire East Council and said he welcomed the return to the cabinet system of governance which comes into force today.

Cllr Mannion was speaking after narrowly holding off a challenge from Conservative Cllr Stewart Gardiner for the leadership.

Councillor wants more public questions at Cheshire East cabinet meetings

Cheshire East Council should not restrict members of the public from asking questions at future cabinet meetings just because the subject isn’t on the agenda, a councillor has said.

The council is due to switch back from its current committee system of governance to a leader and cabinet style in May next year.

Cheshire East Council has voted to scrap its committee system and revert to a leader and cabinet style of governance next May.

The decision comes on the back of the government announcing plans for new legislation to abolish the committee system, which it said could be ‘unclear, duplicative, and wasteful, leading to slower, less efficient decision-making’.

Tories call for Cheshire East Council change to cabinet system

Cheshire East needs to seek government advice on how quickly it can switch to a cabinet system because of an urgent need to speed up decision-making, the Conservatives said.

Knutsford councillor Tony Dean (Con) even asked if it was possible to decide within 24 hours if there were any emergency powers which could be introduced to speed up decision-making, describing the pace of change currently as “snail-like”.

Cheshire East Council’s change from cabinet to committee has seen the end of a system which brought “ignominy to this council, with police investigations into some decisions”, a councillor said.

Councillors from all parties agreed the committee system, which replaced the cabinet system in May last year, had so far been successful.
