Plans for a 6.7% hike in the police precept were signed off today – but 30 of the 60 PCSOs in Cheshire facing redundancy will still lose their jobs.

The annual rise for the police element of the council tax (precept) for a band D property is usually capped at £15.

Cheshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner says he is “disappointed” with the decision to axe 60 PCSOs and has put forward alternative proposals which could potentially save 10 roles.

Assistant Chief Constable Alison Ross emailed stakeholders last week saying the force planned to press ahead with proposals to reduce the number of police community support officer posts from 87 to 27.

Cheshire’s police and crime panel has quizzed Commissioner Dan Price over plans which could see up to 60 PSCO roles axed across the county.

The constabulary launched an internal consultation this week to save £13 million over the next four years through reducing Police Community Support Officers and redistributing warranted police officers into neighbourhood policing teams.
