Cheshire East Council’s current £46.9m deficit on its special educational needs budget is forecast to rise to a whopping £306.9m by 2028.

Councils across the UK are struggling with massive deficits in their dedicated schools grant budget because funding has not matched soaring demand and spiralling costs.

No schools in Cheshire East are affected by the current RAAC concrete fears across the UK, officials have confirmed.

Cheshire East Council says it has carried out checks on its maintained schools and said there is no evidence they contain the concrete type which has led to fears of buildings suddenly collapsing.

Cheshire East has contacted Government education chiefs about the growing pressure on schools as teachers continue to pick up Covid from pupils.

Director of education Jacky Forster told the council’s children and families committee that Covid was having a bigger impact in primary than secondary schools at present.

New Nantwich free primary school plans move step closer

Plans for a new primary school in Nantwich moved a step closer when councillors agreed to go out to consultation over the proposals and look for potential sponsors to run it.

As revealed by Nantwich News, the £3.5m free school is earmarked for land close to Nantwich Town’s Weaver Stadium and is needed to cope with rising pupils numbers created by a new housing development.
