Nantwich Museum Millennium Gallery

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is being celebrated at Nantwich Museum with an exhibition “Nantwich under the two Elizabeths” opening tomorrow (June 2).

It’s one of the most ambitious exhibitions to be staged at the Pillory Street venue, occupying both galleries.

Life in Nantwich under the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Elizabeth II will be compared and contrasted with reference to buildings, trade, food and health and clothing.

A Heritage Lottery Fund grant is covering the cost and it will also pay for the temporary exhibition to tour the Lyceum Theatre in Crewe and Ford Green Hall in Staffordshire.

There will also be workshops, town tours and special events throughout the summer, including:

On Sunday June 3, Merrie Music’ at 11am, music by Elizabethan musicians at 4.30pm. Also ‘Sounds of the 1950s’ 2pm and 3pm by guitar vocalist Graham Holly.

On Saturday June 16, Nantwich Singers concert at St Mary’s Church, and on Friday June 22 at 7.30pm ‘Elizabethan Words and Wine’.

Tickets £7.50 and £7 (museum members), which includes a glass of wine and themed readings from both historic periods by The Nantwich Players.

On July 4, 11, 18, and 25, four themed talks on Nantwich in the Elizabethan era and 1950s. Tickets £3 (members £2).

On July 14, ‘Fabulous Fifties Fashion’ Talks at 1.30pm and 3pm by The History Wardrobe on 1950s fashion. Speak to Elizabethan costumed interpreters 12.30pm –and 4.30pm.

On Saturday August 11, the ‘Museum Flag Day’ fundraising day in the town square takes place with a 1950s vintage vehicle.

And on Saturday August 25,  ‘Elizabethan Feasts’ at 10.30am –and 4.30pm will be held. Meet a costumed Elizabethan housewife and learn how she prepared a 16th century feast.
