Nantwich Cricket Club, Whitehouse Lane

Nantwich CC 1sts returned to winning ways with a dramatic last-gasp victory at Urmston.

Andrew Newton’s side pulled off the unlikely win by smashing 88 runs off the final 10 overs in a game delayed by rain.

Batting first, Urmston opener Chris Watson hit 39 and a fourth wicket partnership of 96 between Lewis Jackson (44) and home skipper Sanit Panda (90 not out) left the hosts on 204 for six off their 40 overs.

With Nantwich missing prize bowler Jimmy Warrington, Ollie Griffiths took responsibility and did well to claim four wickets for 84 runs.

In reply, Nantwich openers Jonny Kettle (37) and Chris Simpson (56) got the visitors off to a good start.

Both Loius Bentley and Ray Doyle made contributions, but Nantwich struggled to maintain the run rate needed.

But with 45 runs needed and just over four overs remaining, Ollie Law was joined at the wicket by Sam Hunt.

And the pair set about the home attack with relish, both striking sixes as their target began to move closer and closer.

Then, with two balls remaining and the scores level, Urmston’ s Rana Mallok bowled a no ball to supply the run that Nantwich needed to secure victory.

The Dabbers landed a much-needed 25 points while their hosts were left with nine points.

Nantwich remain in seventh place in the Cheshire County Premier League, 40 points behind leaders Oxton.

The 2nd team did not fair so well when they entertained Urmston at Whitehouse Lane yesterday (June 23).

Despite Ben Mogg claiming 6 for 63 and bowling Urmston 2nds out for 184, Nantwich slumped to 122 all out in reply.

Meanwhile, today’s Nantwich CC 4th’s match at home has been postponed because of a water-logged pitch.
