Nantwich CC 1sts continued their bid for a third successive title with a 68-run victory over Widnes.

The impressive unbeaten run has taken the Whitehouse Lane side to the top of Cheshire County Premier Division with just two games to go.

Nantwich lost the toss at Widnes and were put into bat on a damp wicket which had been under water during the week.

Without in form Louis Bentley, Nantwich started slowly.

But thanks to an impressive 70 by Ray Doyle , and Sam Hunt’s 30, they reached 200 for 9.

There were also key contributions from Andrew Newton (23no) and both Ollie Griffiths and Chris Connolly struck sixes late on. For Widnes bowling honours belonged to Sam Agrawal who claimed 4 for 39.

Widnes’ reply hit the buffers early on with three quick wickets, including a smart run out by Ollie Griffiths.

The only patnership of  length was between Danny Naughton who top scored with 58 and Ian Spencer who scored 24.

Griffiths bowled a miserly spell to prevent any real progress from Widnes and when Nantwich re-introduced Chris Connolly into the bowling attack and he mopped up the tail with figures of 3 for 36.

Griffiths claimed 3 for 39, Jimmy Warrington claimed a brace and Ray Doyle claimed the other wicket to fall ensuring Nantwich claimed all 25 points.

Nantwich welcome third from bottom Urmston to Whitehouse Lane next Saturday September 1.

And victory and other results going their way could see them land the title once more.
