Nantwich Show organisers have paid tribute to the man who helped turn the event into the biggest crowd-puller of its kind in the UK.

John Broomhall has stepped down after 25 years as chairman of Nantwich Agricultural Society which stages the event every July at Dorfold Park.

The retired auctioneer of Nantwich has also served 40 years on the show committee.

He helped it grow to become the largest one day agricultural event in the UK and home to the International Cheese awards which attracts entries from across the globe.

His retirement party at Crewe Alexandra saw a large crowd gather to pay tribute to the man known as “Mr Nantwich Show”.

Society President John Lea said: “From very small beginnings in 1897, the Society now takes the name of Nantwich industry world-wide.

“This has been an incredible achievement and over the last four decades John Broomhall has been a driving force behind that success.

“He is held in high regard by his friends and colleagues who turned out in force to wish him well in his retirement.”

Mr Broomhall, a former vice chairman of Wright Manley, has handed over the famous black bowler hat worn every show day to another society stalwart, Michael-John Parkin.

The sales director at Barnett Jones and Cooke agricultural insurance specialists in Nantwich, said: “I am delighted to be taking on the role of chairman.

“As a former dairy farmer, my family have been involved in the show for 50 years. John Broomhall has done a sterling job and will be tough act to follow.”

John Lea, managing director of Mornflake in Crewe , presented Mr Broomhall with a large framed picture capturing memories of his time as chairman and his wife, Elizabeth, presented Mrs Rosemary Broomhall with flowers.
