plays - Nantwich Players Theatre - The Witches

Nantwich Players started their new season with an adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s ‘Jamaica Inn’, writes Claire Faulkner.

Directed by Jeremy Acklam, this production highlights everything which The Players do best.

Challenging dramatic productions with great casting and incredible set design.

‘Jamaica Inn’ tells the story of ‘Mary Yellan’, a young woman who goes to live with her Aunt and Uncle at Jamaica Inn following the death of her Mother.

‘Mary’ arrives to find her Aunt Patience in an almost ghost-like state, tormented and bullied by her husband Joss, who is landlord of Jamaica Inn.

Mary soon realises all is not what it seems at the inn which is always closed and never has guests.

The story of ‘Jamaica Inn’ is dark and eerie, full of suspense and mystery.

The set design complements this wonderfully and congratulations must be given to Richard Thompson, John Whitehead, Allan Pearson and Steve Gent who constructed such an amazing set.

It’s an incredible achievement and must have been hard work, but from the audience point of view, the effect was definitely worth it.

On the stage for almost the entire production, Sian Weedon was strong and passionate as ‘Mary’, giving everything to the role.

Don Hirst played ‘Joss Merlyn’ with the same strength of character and was suitably cast as the landlord who also organises the local coastal wreckers and smugglers.

I hope we see them both again in future Players productions.

‘Jamaica Inn’ runs at The Players Theatre in Nantwich until September 20.

If you’re a fan of Daphe du Maurier, you will enjoy this production.
