Drivers in Crewe and Nantwich are being offered free tyre safety checks before winter sets in.

Crewe Tyre & Exhaust staff has launched the initiative as part of National Tyre Safety Month.

The West Street depot is offering a free check covering tyre pressures, tread depth and a visual inspection of the tyre’s condition to ensure they are safe and legal.

“October is normally the wettest month of the year in the UK, so it’s essential tyres are in a good condition in preparation for this,” said Eric Harrison, owner of Crewe Tyre & Exhaust.

“After last year’s record rainfall we should expect another very wet winter and, without safe and legal tyres, motorists will be risking their safety on the road.”

Every year more than 1,200 road accident injuries result from illegal, defective or under-inflated tyres.

Under current regulations, drivers in the UK must have at least 1.6mm of tread depth across the central three quarters of their tyre, around its entire circumference.

Failing to comply can result in a potential fine of £2,500 and three penalty points for each illegal tyre.

Driving on low tread depth brings an increased risk of aquaplaning in wet weather and loss of control.

Crewe Tyre & Exhaust say drivers can also perform a quick and easy 20p test.

You can insert a 20p coin into the main grooves of a car tyre. If the outer band of the coin is visible, the tread depth may be below the legal minimum and should be inspected immediately.
