Black Coffee, Crewe Lyceum

Agatha Christie is the Queen of murder mystery – and Poirot fans will be pleased to know that ‘Black Coffee’ is on at The Lyceum this week, writes Claire Faulkner.

A Bill Kenwright production in association with The Agatha Christie Theatre Company, ‘Black Coffee’ was the first of Christie’s plays and the only one to include the famous Belguim detective, ‘Hercule Poirot’.

As a keen Agatha Christie fan, I was delighted to have the opportunity to go and see this ‘who done it’.

I was not disappointed.

A classic theatrical murder mystery, with twists and turns around each character.

Through stunning set design the audience was quickly transported back into 1930s England, in the library of ‘Sir Claud Amory’.

‘Sir Claud’ has called his household together to announce the arrival of ‘Hercule Poirot’, a detective who will solve the mystery of a missing formula which is worth thousands of pounds.

During a blackout, ‘Sir Claud’ is murdered, our hero arrives now having to find the missing formula, but also to find out who the murderer is.

Jason Durr leads the cast as ‘Poirot’.

He gave a delightful and perfect portrayal of a well-known and loved character, making the role his own, without losing the characteristics that the audience all recognise and love.

Any Poirot story isn’t complete without ‘Captain Hastings’, and in this production, Robin McCallum plays this lovable character perfectly and with all the charm and style you would expect.

My little grey cells let me down, and I didn’t work out who the murderer was until late on in the show.

I won’t spoil any endings by telling you ‘who done it’, but can predict that if you go I’m sure you’ll enjoy the show as much as I did.
