Nantwich Choral Society

Nantwich Choral Society is set to raise the roof with a concert featuring exchange singers from Germany.

The choir and friends from Lüdenscheid will present a programme of well-known works by Haydn at Nantwich St Mary’s Parish Church on June 27.

They will combine to make a giant choir of 140 singers.

And plans are being made to give the German guests a memorable stay with a sight-seeing tour of Nantwich and Chester.

Choral Society chairman Elizabeth Lea said: “A few weeks ago we visited Germany for a joint performance with the Oratorienchor Lüdenscheid choir in their home town.

“Singers from Nantwich stayed with members of the German choir and now it’s our turn to offer the same warm welcome.

“It’s wonderful to see international links and great friendships made through the love of music.”

Conducted by the society’s musical director John Naylor, the programme will include Harmoniemesse – one of the most popular works penned by the Austrian music maestro.

There will also be the historic Missa in tempore belli written in August 1796 at the time of Austria’s mobilisation for war against Napoleon’s invasion.

The evening will be supported by the Northern Concordia Orchestra which includes many of the region’s top orchestral players.

Soprano Franziska Főrster, from Lüdenscheid, Harriet Goodwin, a former ‘Singer of the World’ finalist, Sam Odaleinde, a tenor who graduated from the choir of St John’s College Cambridge and Paul Henly, a Shrewsbury-based singing teacher making his debut with NCS, will all sing solo.

Elizabeth added: “Out of Haydn’s many brilliant compositions, the six last great masses represent the greatness of his genius.

“St Mary’s Church will be filled with some of the most thrilling music in the choral repertoire.”
