Busy day at Willaston community cafe

A community cafe set up in a former church building in Willaston has marked its one-year anniversary.

Big-hearted volunteers like Lesley, Emma and Katy (pictured) from the village have been running the cafe every Saturday since its launch in July last year.

And at the weekend they marked their first birthday in the former St John’s Methodist Church with a special anniversary celebration.

The cafe, which opens 10am to 3pm on Saturdays, was once again packed out and the outlet also helps to raise vital funds for local causes.

Villagers have clubbed together to produce tasty home-made cakes and treats which are sold and money raised goes to charities and good causes.

So far they have raised £5,000, and this will also help to fund another life-saving defibrillator for the village.

The team at the cafe said: “Thank you to all who came on Saturday to celebrate our first year.

“And thank you to everyone who comes to the cafe week after week.

“We have raised and given back to the community more than £5,000 – what a massive achievement.

“We have a new defibrillator on order and will be in place very soon.

“The one at the social club has been deployed several times with good outcomes.

“So to have one on the other side of the railway is a blessing, there is also one at the Masonic lodge. Keep your eyes on for next weeks treats.”
