Bungling burglars were ‘smoked out’ and fled empty-handed after breaking in to a petrol station in Nantwich.

The two offenders forced their way in to the Sainsbury’s petrol station on Middlewich Road just before 2am yesterday (July 22).

Once inside, they attempted to break in to the back office but activated a “smoke cloak” anti-intruder system.

This caused the building to fill with smoke, forcing the pair to flee the scene empty-handed.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said they have a description of one of the suspects who is a man, about 6ft tall and large build.

He was wearing a dark fleece, a balaclava and trainers.

Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with any information is asked to contact Cheshire Constabulary on 101, quoting incident number 131,009 or give us the details online via https://cheshire.police.uk/contact/general-enquiries
