fire safe - Andrew Cliffe, headteacher at Brine Leas, interviewed by BBC at school funding cuts protest

Headteacher of Brine Leas Andrew Cliffe is to retire in December after 24 years at the Nantwich school.

He revealed his decision to parents and staff as pupils returned to the Audlem Road academy this week.

Governors said they are hoping to appoint a new headteacher before Mr Cliffe’s final day, December 31.

Mr Cliffe (pictured), who has been headteacher for 11 years, will continue in a part-time role in running the Multi Academy Trust (MAT).

In a letter issued today, he said: “I have been privileged to have been headteacher for 11 years, and I will leave with many fond memories of my time in the post.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed every one of my nigh on 25 years – it has been both rewarding and exciting.

“Over that time we have achieved much with the support of a happy, committed and highly professional staff, and an outstanding leadership team.

“It is wonderful to be leaving on a high with possibly the school’s best ever set of results.”

Governors paid tribute to him and said they have already been planning the recruitment process for a replacement.

In his time, Mr Cliffe has led the school to become an academy in 2007, oversaw the opening of BL6, and new buildings such as D Block.

Su Turner, Chair of Governors at Brine Leas, said: “Members, trustees and governors wish to record their thanks for his outstanding leadership of Brine Leas, which has been achieved with commitment, humour and being approachable to all staff, students, parents and the whole community.

“We are confident that we will be able to appoint a worthy successor to continue with the ever-changing challenges of education, and who will continue to lead the school to further success.”

Mr Cliffe added he hoped to be able to grow the MAT in his part-time role going forward from January.

“I will miss everything about the school,” he added.

“The wonderful children who engage me with their amazing contributions, good humour and achievements; the parents who have been so supportive; and of course the outstanding staff and governing body.

“I feel I will be passing Brine Leas over in a very positive and healthy position.”
