Highfields visit by MP Kieran Mullan

MP Kieran Mullan went back to school in Nantwich to celebrate activities designed to boost the health and wellbeing of children and inspire the next generation of politicians.

Dr Mullan, who works as a A&E doctor, visited Highfields Academy in Nantwich to present prizes to its Sporting Giants.

These were pupils who have excelled as school sports ambassadors and promoted good manners on and off the pitch.

Highfields Principal Simon Dyson said: “The Sporting Giants scheme was introduced last year to reward children who have represented the school more than 20 times at sporting fixtures and have encouraged classmates to get involved in fitness no matter what their level of ability.

“We were delighted our new MP could take time from his busy schedule to attend the ceremony.”

Highfields, on Cumberland Avenue, has pupils who represent the school at county level and are encouraged to shake hands with opponents and be gracious in victory.

Dr Mullan, who plays for Crewe and Nantwich Rugby Club, said: “Highfields is a good example of a school working hard to support the physical and mental health of pupils.

“I’m a big believer in promoting sport and its values to children.”

He also stopped off to meet Year 5 pupils taking part in an ‘election’ campaign.

Activities were organised by student teacher Nicole McMullan to engage children with politics and democracy.

They ended with a vote for their favourite party with winners, the Swallows party, pledging comfy classroom chairs and more school trips.
