A field that would be built on for Crewe West (1) (1)

Dear Editor,
I am furious and deeply alarmed by Harworth Group Plc’s outrageous proposal to construct a sprawling housing development – deceitfully named ‘Crewe West’- on the precious green fields of Wistaston, not Crewe as they so conveniently suggest.

Let’s call this what it is: a brazen land grab by developers who see nothing but pound signs where grazing cattle and open countryside now lie.

Their so-called “mixed-use development” would bulldoze approximately 57 acres of cherished grassland – our green gap between Crewe and Nantwich – with up to 660 houses, a 60-bed care home, and a commercial centre.

We’ve been here before.

The Muller Property Group attempted a similar stunt in 2013. That plan was rightly thrown out, only for chunks of it to resurface later in the Wistaston Brook estate.

At least Muller pretended to care – proposing a school, proper exits, green spaces, and some semblance of infrastructure.

Harworth, by contrast, offers a concrete swamp with no clear plan for how our already stretched roads, schools, and GP practices are supposed to cope.

To add insult to injury, Redrow Homes are circling just south of the site, eyeing up another 220 houses across 31 acres.

Is Wistaston to be sacrificed entirely at the altar of profit?

Let’s not forget: in less than 10 years, Wistaston has absorbed 450 new homes from the Wistaston Brook and Kingfisher Reach developments – bringing with them a flood of extra cars, crumbling roads, longer GP waits, and more strain on our already overwhelmed local services.

And now they want to dump hundreds more on us?

Where are the new schools? Where are the dentists? Where are the GP surgeries?

They don’t exist – because these developers don’t care. Once they’ve lined their pockets, they’ll be gone, leaving residents to pick up the pieces.

What’s the point of a Local Plan Strategy if it’s ignored every time a developer knocks on the door? This land is meant to be protected.

If Cheshire East Council gives in again, it’s effectively declaring open season on any green field next to existing housing. That would be a betrayal of the highest order.

This is more than just another development. It’s the continued erasure of our rural identity – turning once-distinct villages into an indistinguishable urban sprawl.

Soon there’ll be no Wistaston, no Crewe, no Nantwich – just one big grey mess we might as well call Crewich.

We must draw the line. Now. Before it’s too late.

I urge every resident who cares about the future of our community to take a stand. Join the live webinar via the developer’s Crewe West website on Wednesday 28th May at 6pm and let your voice be heard.

And don’t forget to view and comment on the plans on the Cheshire East Council portal (Planning Ref: 25/1733/EIA): https://www.cheshireeast.gov.uk/planning/view_a_planning_application/view_a_planning_application.aspx

Let’s send a clear message: We will not sit quietly while our countryside is sold off to the highest bidder.

What absolute nonsense Kia! Let me guess – you work for Harworth, don’t you? If it were up to you, every last field would be bulldozed and built over. And then what? You’d be the first to complain there’s nowhere left to walk, to breathe, to just be. It’s so obvious – this isn’t about community or wellbeing. It’s all about profit for you, isn’t it?

  2. I bet your house was built on green belt? Where do you think the housing estates of Wistaston were built in the past? No different today!

  3. Sadly this is what the Labour government wants. Urban sprawl they hate the countryside.
