A brilliant opening stand of 137 was the foundation of a Nantwich CC success that took the first team into the last 32 of the ECB National Club Championship.
Ray Doyle’s team will now take on Cheshire County Cricket League rivals Didsbury for a place in the last 16 after beating Wolverhampton CC by six wickets at Whitehouse Lane.
Doyle won the toss and asked the Birmingham League side to bat first and was rewarded with a couple of early wickets but an aggressive 91 from George Margetts enabled the visitors to post a respectable 225-8 from their 40 overs.
But Ben Wright (71) and Ali Chughtai (69) perfectly set up a run chase that was finished off by Spencer Byatt’s unbeaten 29.
The cup win made up for a frustrating outing in the league when the Dabbers pursuit of Bowdon’s 205 all out was halted on 50-2 by the rain.
Oliver Griffiths, with 3-45, had been the pick of a fine Nantwich bowling effort but the weather meant it was in vain.
The second team, though, did manage to play a full match and pulled off a thrilling win at Oxton.
Joe Bolton and Denny Morgan took three wickets apiece as the home side were bowled out for 219 from their 50 overs.
On 171-1, Nantwich appeared to be cruising to victory, thanks to knocks from Owen Silvester (36), Oliver Howell (61) and Arthur Bate (59).
But the Dabbers then lost seven wickets for 40 runs before being steered to a two-wicket by Morgan and skipper Alan Chesters, who hit the winning run from the fourth ball of the final over.
For the Saturday 3rds, Jeff Maynard top-scored with 43 as Nantwich made 107 all out from their 40 overs at Stafford CC, who got past their target with three wickets to spare.
There was also an away defeat for the Sunday 3rds, who fell 18 runs short of Ashley CC’s 165-4 from 40 overs.
This Saturday, the 2nds are at home to Cheadle CC, with the game getting under way at midday at Whitehouse Lane.
The firsts are away at Oxton CC.
