Nantwich Mayor Mary Slinn

Nantwich resident Mary Slinn has had a busy time of things over the past few weeks but she’s ‘loving every minute’ of being the new Town Mayor.

Since Mary took the chains of office on May 15 she has attended many events beginning with a presentation of medals and book tokens to children from 10 local primary schools following Nantwich Rotary’s annual art and writing competition.

More than 650 entries were submitted by children whittled down by Rotarian Michael Tiddy (art) and calligraphy expert Frances Passmore (handwriting) who had the tough challenge of choosing the winners.

A range of medals were presented with golds going to pupils from Stapeley, Bridgemere and Nantwich Academy primary schools.

Hot on the heels of that came attending Reaseheath Family Festival and the launch of ‘Chatter Bench’ on Nantwich town square as part of Dementia Awareness Week.

“It’s been a whirlwind but I’m loving every minute,” said Mary.

“A highlight was Chatter Bench as The Thursday Club at St Mary’s Church Hall is one of my chosen causes.

“Two benches on the town square were decorated in shades of blue and volunteers were there for a week to encourage people to sit on the benches and just chat.

“The Thursday Club is a social and activity club for those living with dementia, their loved ones, carers and family.

“The club provides a safe place with a weekly activity programme, along with lots of chat, laughter, shared advice and of course cake and refreshments.

“I feel it is important to remember that Dementia doesn’t just impact individuals. It affects families, carers and the wider community.”

Mary, who has lived in Nantwich 45 years, has also enjoyed attending events with her consort, best friend Annette McKeith, including a get-together for organisers of Nantwich Food Festival and sponsors.

“I listened to the difficulties they have been facing in respect of costings.

“I was pleased to hear that they have a sponsor for the next three years to pay Cheshire East for the use of the car parks. From speaking to organisers it seems that this year will be the best yet with people queuing up to take part,” she added.

With a packed engagement book for the rest of the summer, the Mayor is particularly looking forward to attending a Nantwich Players’ production of The Tempest and surprising a Nantwich resident on their 100th birthday!

Her chosen causes are The Thursday Club at St. Mary’s Parish Hall and the Dogs Trust – and she has promised a ‘big reveal’ soon of a ‘cuddly, furry helper’ as she goes about her mayoral duties.

    Do we need mayors?

Seems a waste of money to me.
