Nantwich in Bloom and the Mayor’s charity have received a welcome boost from the Black Lion pub.
Darren Snell, landlord of the Welsh Row venue, has sponsored the floral displays in the large planters outside NatWest Bank for a second year.
He has also donated to Nantwich Mayor Cllr Mary Slinn’s chosen charity The Dog’s Trust.
Mrs Slinn, who took over as Mayor in May, visited the 1664 hostelry for her first presentation to the charity and to hear about plans for new food offerings and Darren’s involvement in Nantwich Food Festival.
The former chef at the Dorchester Hotel London and Chester Grosvenor Hotel will demonstrate his culinary skills on the chef’s theatre stage during the festival.
The Black Lion will also host Food History Walking Tours over festival weekend August 29-31.
He said: “It was lovely to meet Mary in person and for her to show such genuine support for Welsh Row.
“I’m keen to drive footfall to this end of town not just for my business but for the benefit of all the independent traders along this historic street.
“It’s been great to welcome new businesses such as the wool shop, Moss Cafe and Rolling Pin bakery in recent months all adding to the vibrancy of this end of town.”
Darren’s green fingers have clinched The Black Lion several gold awards for floral excellence in the Nantwich in Bloom local competitions in recent years.
His hanging baskets and displays in the ‘Courtyard at The Lion’ are much admired by visitors who stop for pictures outside the black and white landmark.

Mrs Slinn said: “Nantwich is blessed with many architectural gems and The Black Lion is one of them.
“It’s remarkable that it has been part of Nantwich life since 1664 or possibly even before according to some historians.
“As Mayor, I want to get out and meet people who support the town economy and make Nantwich a great a place to visit.
“So I was delighted to meet Darren who works hard to preserve this beautiful old building for the benefit of Nantwich and generations to come.”
Mrs Slinn, owner of a black Labrador called Bracken, is supporting The Dogs Trust charity and The Thursday Club at St Mary’s Parish Hall during her term as Mayor.
More information on the Food History Walking Tours will be announced nearer the time.
