South Cheshire Amateur Boxing Club has opened a new state-of-the-art boxing gym at its base in Crewe.
Stephanie Peacock MP, Minister for Sport, Media, Civil Society and Youth, joined young boxers and guests at the official ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the centre’s grand opening.
The gym was a collaborative project between the boxing club and Crewe Youth Club.
It drew funding from the Government’s Towns Fund and Youth Investment Fund as well as the Garfield Weston Foundation, the Community Ownership Fund and the Improved, Greener, Communities Facilities Fund.
Young people can now make use of the first purpose-built youth space in Crewe in more than 60 years.
The new state-of-the-art youth space has been generously funded by the UK Government’s Towns Fund ((£1,190,402), the UK Government’s Youth Investment Fund (£820,622), the Garfield Weston Foundation (£150,000), the Community Ownership Fund (£300,000), and the Improved, Greener, Communities Facilities Fund (£15,000).
Connor Naismith, MP for Crewe and Nantwich, said: “Having been engaged with this project since long before the General Election, I am over the moon for Rob, Mike, Nathan and all of the young people who will benefit from this facility now it has been delivered.
“The Trustees have worked tirelessly to bring this project from ambition to reality, and they should be applauded for all of that work, which will be of significant benefit to the individuals who use the facility and the wider town in Crewe.
“Sport can play a crucial role in the development of young people, both in terms of physical activity, discipline and broader skills applicable to other areas of life.
“It is therefore fantastic to see this partnership between local government, central government, the third sector and the wider community deliver a project which will provide these opportunities to our young people.”

Nathan Clarke, head coach and founder of South Cheshire Amateur Boxing Club, added: “We are all so excited to see our fantastic new facility come to life!
“We’ve built it and now we want to see young people flooding through the doors. We have a dedicated coaching team ready to go, and some amazing new equipment, including two full-size boxing rings.
“Boxing is not only a brilliant way to keep fit, and learn about discipline, structure and growth, our coaches bring much more than just boxing, their support makes a huge difference to young people’s lives.”
South Cheshire Amateur Boxing Club promotes community cohesion through its ‘open door policy’, encouraging local community members to attend, commit to the club values and code of behaviour, regardless of gender, disability, age, ethnicity or culture.
Mike Morris, Chair of Crewe Youth Club, added: “Today is an historic moment; working together we’ve built a state-of-the-art space for young people on land that had been derelict for over 10 years.”
