Brookfield Allotments - Jonathan Sayer

Volunteers behind a scheme to resolve flooding on a Nantwich allotment site have received extra backing from town councillors.

The Brookfield Allotment Association team has already completed some work on a project to improve the site and attract more tenants.

This has included a new BBQ and seating area, more planters and boxes, a new pond area and more than 100 trees planted to create a natural woodland, thanks to funding secured earlier in the year.

Jonathan Sayer (pictured), who is spearheading the project, told Nantwich Town Council that the rest of the project has been delayed by further flooding and drainage issues – and historic problem on the site.

He appealed for an extra £6,188 of council funding towards a scheme which aims to resolve the flooding problems permanently.

He said: “The flooding is up to ankle and knee deep in places in the bottom areas. This goes on in spring and in autumn and it’s putting people off, and tenants are vacating their sites.

“We have 90% occupancy currently across the site, it’s been popular since the works we have already completed.

“Taking the water away and putting in a long term solution would be to install proper drainage and connecting it to the current main drain that goes under the site.”

He said this would involve running a new drain of more than 50 metres in length to the existing drain which has been surveyed.

It would cost around £7,745 in total to complete the drainage project, he added.

Cllr Riddell Graham said: “I’m in favour of carrying on with this. We are getting tenants we didn’t have before so I’ll be voting in favour of this.”

Cllr Stuart Bostock said: “We should back this and go ahead. This would get rid of both the flooding problems and the horsetail.”

Council clerk Samantha Roberts said there had been savings already made in the budget so the funding is in place if councillors agreed.

The vote was unanimous in favour of providing the extra funding.
