John Broomhall - Nantwich Agricultural Society

Tributes have been paid to John Broomhall, former chairman of The Nantwich Show, who has died aged 90.

John, who received an MBE for services to agriculture, was chairman of Nantwich Agricultural Society for 25 years.

He was a former partner and highly regarded auctioneer with Wright Manley, latterly Wright Marshall at Beeston, Crewe and Chester Markets.

John was also chairman of the former Conservative Club, now Nantwich Club, for many years.

Under his leadership and guidance The Nantwich Show flourished into one of the most respected one-day events in the North West.

A Nantwich Agricultural Society spokesperson said: “His commitment was unwavering.

“He gave his time generously, led with humility, and always held the best interests of the Society and its community at heart.

“During his leadership, the Nantwich Show strengthened its reputation as one of the leading agricultural events in the region.

“John oversaw significant growth in its scale, its professionalism, and its reach—helping to bring together farmers, rural businesses, families, and visitors from far and wide.

“His understanding of the agricultural world, shaped by his long and respected career in auctioneering with Wright Manley and later Wright Marshall, enriched everything he did.

“John’s MBE stands as a fitting acknowledgment of the impact he made not only here in Nantwich but across the wider rural community.

“Yet those who worked alongside him know that he never sought recognition. His leadership was quiet, steady and deeply rooted in service.

“To us, he was not only a Chairman but a mentor, a colleague, and a trusted friend. His legacy can be felt throughout the Society—in the traditions he helped preserve, the improvements he championed, and the community spirit he nurtured.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Susan, Jonathan, Thomas, and the entire Broomhall family.

“John’s contribution to Nantwich Agricultural Society will never be forgotten. His influence lives on in the Society he shaped and in the hearts of all who had the privilege of working with him.”

John was a beloved husband of the late Rosemary, much loved dad of Susan, dear Popa of Jonathan and Thomas.

His funeral takes place on Monday December 1st at 12:30pm at St Mary’s Church, Nantwich.

Donations in memory of John will be gratefully received for P.S.P.A (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Association) and St Mary’s.
