A dramatic last-minute venue change did little to dampen the “Jabbin Dabber Boxing Show”.
The event delivered a memorable night of amateur boxing at Crewe Alexandra, after having to move from its original home at Nantwich Town.
A rule change from England Boxing, unrelated to either club, meant the original venue could no longer host the event.
But Crewe Alexandra stepped in to ensure the Nantwich club’s fighters had the chance to showcase talents in front of a packed crowd.
It featured four skill bouts and nine contest bouts, bringing together a strong mix of clubs from across the country.
The night opened with an encouraging performance from newcomer Lawrence Dale, who faced James Dean of Holmes Chapel ABC.
For Dale, it was a baptism of fire, but one he handled with admirable composure.
The show ran smoothly and the action kept spectators engaged, despite the occasional controversial scorecard, the overall standard of boxing remained high.
One of the standout contests saw 39-year-old debutant Becky Mechin take on 19-year-old Emily Cabemaikadavu of Fan ABC in Staffordshire.
By the third round, fatigue began to set in for both athletes, but Mechin found an extra gear, landing several scoring blows late in the contest.
The judges ultimately awarded the fight to the Jabbin Dabber boxer via split decision.
The main event delivered a big finish as Isaac Miller needed just 30 seconds to secure a first-round stoppage victory.
Making his first appearance for the club following a transfer from another amateur boxing club, Miller asserted his dominance, unleashing a barrage that forced the referee to halt the contest early.
Jabbin Dabber coach Simon Jones said: “It was a great night of boxing for all the spectators who came out to support the club and the boxers. The atmosphere was brilliant.
“Some of the decisions were against us, but like I always tell the boxers — don’t leave any doubt in the judges’ minds.
“There’s plenty we can take away and work on back in the gym.
“I’d like to thank Cllr Joy O’Hara for reaching out to Crewe Alex at very short notice so our club could still put the show on, and a big thank you to Crewe Alexandra for agreeing to host us.”
