Peacock Railway open running day

Railway enthusiasts and families enjoyed a fantastic afternoon as the much-loved Peacock Railway in Willaston held its first Public Running Day.

Operated by the South Cheshire Model Engineering Society, the miniature railway behind The Peacock Inn on Crewe Road, marked the start of a new season with a day out for families.

Visitors were treated to rides along the railway’s five-inch gauge track, which winds for nearly a quarter of a mile around the scenic site.

Passengers enjoyed two laps behind a variety of miniature steam and battery-electric locomotives, with proceeds supporting the volunteer-run society that keeps the railway running.

In addition to the passenger trains, guests admired the detailed Gauge 1 (45mm) model railway on the society’s raised track.

At around 95 metres (310 feet) in length, it is believed to be the longest raised Gauge 1 railway of its kind in the North West.

Behind the scenes, society members spent the winter carrying out essential maintenance and improvements, ensuring everything was in top condition for the new season.

The opening event set the tone for a busy year ahead, with further public running days planned through to late October.

The next event will take place on Sunday 3rd May from 12–4pm.

A representative for the railway said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who came along to support our first running day of the year — it was wonderful to see so many families and railway enthusiasts enjoying the afternoon.

“Our volunteers work incredibly hard behind the scenes, and days like this make it all worthwhile.

“We look forward to welcoming everyone back again on Sunday 3rd May for another great day at the railway.”
