An inaugural charity football match held in memory of Nantwich man Peter ‘Fred’ Chandler has raised more than £1,400 for Prostate Cancer UK, writes Jonathan White.
Friends, family, footballers and supporters gathered at Crewe FC’s Sports Pavilion for the first Peter ‘Fred’ Chandler Memorial Trophy, organised in memory of Peter ‘Fred’ Chandler, who died from prostate cancer in 2025.
The match saw Crewe FC Sunday Men’s Team take on Nantwich Pirates in a competitive but good-spirited encounter.
All proceeds from the day will go to Prostate Cancer UK to help fund lifesaving research, raise awareness and provide support for men and their families affected by the disease.

Peter’s son Mark Chandler, manager of Crewe FC Sunday Men’s Team, organised the event to honour his father’s memory while helping others facing the illness.
The fixture was played on Crewe FC’s recently opened Maggie Vickers 3G pitch, part of the extensive redevelopment of the King George V Playing Fields Sports Pavilion that was officially unveiled earlier this year.
Both teams served up an entertaining contest that finished 4-4 after normal time.
Nantwich Pirates held their nerve to win 4-2 on penalties and lift the inaugural Peter ‘Fred’ Chandler Memorial Trophy.
More than £1,400 has already been raised, with donations continuing to come in.
Mark said: “My Dad was a quiet man who didn’t look for attention or crave the spotlight.
“He kept himself to himself and enjoyed the company of his friends and family. He would always be there for anybody that needed help, you only had to ask.
“Dad loved football and was happiest watching the beautiful game, so this felt like the perfect way to celebrate his life while supporting a cause that means so much to our family.
“The response from everyone involved has been incredible, from the players and volunteers to everyone who came along to support us despite the heat.
“We’re hugely grateful for every donation, and if this event encourages even one more man to be aware of prostate cancer and seek help early, then it’s achieved something really special.
“I would also like to thank Crewe FC for their help and support, allowing us to use these great new facilities free of charge, Andy Truan for organising so much from Nantwich Pirates who are a fantastic group of lads and several people from our team such as Paul Jones, Ian Martin and Matthew Parker all of whom worked extremely hard to support the day.”
