Active Travel stall by Nantwich Town Council at Societies Spectacular

Nantwich councillors are urging residents to take part in an Active Travel survey as they encourage more people to ditch their cars.

The survey is part of a public consultation being run by Cheshire East Council to gauge people’s views on transport and improve walking and cycling routes in Nantwich.

Town councillors Anna Burton and Riddell Graham ran a stall at the Nantwich Societies Spectacular last weekend to promote the healthy initiative.

They were joined by cycling enthusiast and Cheshire East Councillor Ben Wye, as well as ex-officio Graham Fenton.

Together with six other volunteers, the team encouraged local residents to leave the car behind and embrace more active ways of getting around.

Cllr Burton said: “As summer sets in, many of us start thinking about getting fit and ready for the holidays.

“A great way to improve your health, help the environment, and save money is through something called Active Travel.

“Active Travel is simple – it’s about choosing ways of getting around that use a little more energy but cost a lot less.

“Walking, wheeling, cycling, or using public transport are all forms of Active Travel that can make your daily journeys healthier and more enjoyable.

“Instead of hopping in the car, consider walking or biking to your destination.

“If you’re taking the bus, try getting off a stop early or walking to a further stop to add a few extra steps.

“On the train? Sit back and relax with a book or enjoy a chat with fellow passengers.”

The Active Travel consultation is open until the end of August.

Not hard to sympathise with your concern on over development, but thoughtful Nantwich takes more than its share because the northern half of Cheshire East is covered by greenbelt. Greenbelt is not our friend.

I was born at the Barony and grew up in Nantwich, but moved away many years ago for professional reasons. It was many years until I took the chance to visit Nantwich again, and I must say I was quite horrified by what I saw. The town has been turned into a dormitory for commuters working in cities, and the retail experience has been changed entirely to serve the tourist market. How could one live entirely in Nantwich now? Half the services required for a meaningful life have gone, the public transport cut to the bone and the whole place has taken on a rather shabby and despondent feeling.

I was particularly upset to see that the grammar school’s playing fields had been built over by nasty identikit ‘Barratt’ homes. Whoever presided over the decision to sell off the land and deprive pupils of that valuable resource should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

I try to walk all the time within Nantwich from home into Town, I am lucky I am retired I have time on my side. I only drive to the Sainsbury’s or any of the Supermarkets if I am doing a big shop, It easy for me, not so easy for busy parents, who work full time fighting against the clock and time restraints.
It would help if they stopped building more and more houses In Nantwich. Will Cheshire East Council ever wake up, they are there to serve the community who pays their salaries and gold plated pensions.
Nantwich is being ruined by over development.
The price we pay for politicians at national level, local level who serve themselves and not the electorate .
Most of us now despair at the quality of those who are suppose to represent us.
