Nantwich residents are facing a £10 rise in Cheshire East Council’s waste recycling scheme in 2026.
The cash-strapped authority is putting up the annual subscription for the scheme from £59 in 2025 to £69 next year.
More than 100,000 sign up last year, so the rise could earn the authority an extra £1 million.
The council does offer a 25% reduction in the fee for those receiving qualifying benefits.
Cllr David Jefferay, chair of Cheshire East Council environment and communities committee, said: “Last year, more than 100,000 residents subscribed to our garden waste recycling scheme – an increase on the first year of the service.
“I’d like to thank everyone who has already signed up and continues to support this initiative.
“The rise in this year’s subscription fee reflects the significant financial pressures facing the council.
“Our current forecast indicates a potential budget shortfall of £33m for 2026/27.
“By generating income through this non-statutory service, we can maintain its delivery and continue to provide services that we know residents care deeply about, including those that are a legal duty and a lifeline to many, like social care.
“The garden waste scheme offers a simple and convenient way to recycle green waste, with fortnightly collections and all material sent to our composting facility in Leighton, Crewe.
“I’d like to remind residents that are already signed up that their subscription won’t automatically renew – they will need to log back in to the waste portal via the Cheshire East Council website and pay for the service that way.
“I’d recommend doing it now to enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that it’s all in hand and they’re ready for collections from January.”
Once subscribed, residents receive a welcome pack containing a subscription sticker which will have their address and unique number on it.
Residents should attach the new orange coloured sticker to the back of their garden bin (handle side) but not obscuring any current subscription sticker as garden bins without a valid sticker displaying will not be emptied.
Residents who subscribed to the service last year will receive a reminder email with a renew link to click.
Residents not able to sign up online can contact the council on 0300 123 5011.
Subscriptions for 2026 will run from January to December.

It’s to pay for the hotels for the ILLEGAL Immigrants, smoking on their phones all day,, I’m withholding my c/tax from April, Cheshire east are disgusting
@Bill
That is only the case if you pay for your garden bin Bill,I for one don’t as I refuse to pay for something that was once included in my exceptionly high council tax,I will try and avoid giving this council any extra money I legally can.
Jeffing hell, wait till we have a Mayor – more bloody costings on our rates.
Maybe I should charge CEC for sweeping pavement outside my property and for clearing the storm drains once a month, from all the vegetation growing out of them.
@Andrew on email for renewal subscription – that’s bullying by CEC – desperate to get money in.
Think we can safely say, we are going to be hit with a massive increase on rates for 2026/2027, if this extra £10.00 charge on green waste bin is anything to go by.
Why does this Council think people have all this extra money to give to them, when they are totally inept at managing budgets.
Not everyone will get a reduction on this green bin charge, nor on council rates – we certainly don’t as pensioners, on limited monthly income, being just over the threshold for means testing/pension credit.
Can safely say, £69 for 2026 and then £10+ for year on year costings.
It’s a bloody disgrace.
This increase is approx 17%. The statement does not mention any financial costings, surplusses, losses, reasons etc for such a large increase. CEC lose the argument due to lack of information given to Council Tax payers.
Just had an e-mail from CEC asking me to renew my subscription inside 24 hours on their website at a cost of £69. If I don’t do it quickly the e-mail suggests it will be a more difficult task later in the year. One of the worst councils in England.
We have been paying for two, that will now drop to one. We are moving shortly and will try and move out of Cheshire East.
The percentage increase in the charge for garden bins is not in proportion to the current Inflation Rate of 3.8% announced this morning. It is an excuse to increase the fees to cross subsidise the financial incompetence within the Council. They are limited to a maximum increase in Council Tax of 5%, without special permission from the Secretary of State for Local Government.
I predict the the precept for Nantwich Town Council and Crewe Town Council will increase above 5%. This is excluded from the 5% cap.
Until the public sector is held to account for their failure to deliver the tax payer value from the taxes paid this Bureaucratic disease of incompetence and lack of accountability and responsibility will continue.
The council never measures outcomes, just poor more money to try and solve the issues.
I suggest people watch and listen to John Roberts Chief Executive of Appliance on Line who was on the Daily Politics Show last week hosted by Vicky Young on BBC 1 at 12.15pm..
No doubt car parking charges will also increase above the rate of inflation.
They have not published the operating costs of the garden bin collection service they operate.
Cheshire East Council would charge us for the air we breath if they could!!!
I am disabled, I can’t afford the bin so my only joy my garden is not viable anymore, also we were told to buy expensive recyclable green bags for food waste to go in the garden bin, this was hailed as wonderful because it would all be composted, now it’s back into landfill again .we pay twice for everything now disgusting!!!
Absolutely appaling
CE Should let pensioners have it for free or at least not be charged the increase.
I have one and won’t be renewing no wonder fly tipping is on the increase.
Once again the older people of nantwich will suffer as there the ones who look after gardens
You have no shame Cheshire East, but I already knew that
Cheshire east only just got in on the last election,
I think they have underestimated the amount of pensioners that voted,
Pensioners should be exempt from paying this,
Let’s look at the facts,
Pensioners don’t have the luxury of spending, and every penny counts.
Most pensioners pride themselves on their garden as it’s where they spent their time in the summer to relax and spend time.
Why can’t Cheshire east have a little bit of compassion and offer free green bin collection for pensioners.
After all they give FREE PARKING TO WORKERS ON THE NEW MULTI STOREY CAR PARK.🧐
@Barry, that’s not the case at all, food waste is in the green bin and has been for a few years.

It’s a shame that Cheshire don’t tighten up on the amount of traders doing garden work at a cost to the customer,
Only to find they take the waste to the tip and dispose of it for free.
I seen so many times genuine house holder’s trying to empty garden waste waiting because of traders disposing of their garden waste for free.
Unbelievable, especially when not emptied recently!
The garden bin used to be covered by your standard council tax,and you were told to put food waste in it,due to your council being totally inept they decided to charge you for it,one problem they were not legally allowed to charge you for removing food waste, so they told you to put your food waste in your black bin, problem solved they now charge you extra for what you were already paying for.
Please remember this when voting next time
Cheshire east Council are the dumbest council in the country.
As for the green bin increase well at least Dick Turpin wore a mask before he robbed you.
As they missed a green bin collection two weeks ago will they give a refund and his week they haven’t collected the grey bins.
Well we have to pay for the staff dishwashers somehow!
A 16.9 % increase in 1 year.
Absolutely ridiculous.
How do Cheshire East make up these figures.
Can’t wait for the council tax increase now.
What stupid increase are they going to put on that 50% ?
Daylight robbery. Stop wasting money on things people don’t want like multi storey car parks !
Another scandalous CE rip off. No wonder Reform is on the march everywhere!
Had one for the first time last year and will be the last one getting to greedy
