Battle of Nantwich 2019, 19

Organisers of the annual Battle of Nantwich ‘Holly Holy Day’ English Civil War re-enactment are appealing for volunteers to join the team for the 2026 event

Next year’s battle will take place on Saturday 24th January and will see Sealed Knot soldiers once again re-enact the 1644 battle in style.

For more than 50 years, the Sealed Knot has brought this period of history to life, honouring the day when the Royalist siege of Nantwich was lifted by Parliamentarian troops under Thomas Fairfax.

Townspeople celebrated by wearing sprigs of holly in their hats – a tradition that continues to inspire the modern-day “Holly Holy Day”.

It attracts thousands of people to the town centre and volunteers play a vital role in staging the event.

They welcome visitors, provide directions, hand out programmes, keep the town tidy, and ensure everything runs smoothly.

Most are allocated to either the Town Centre or Mill Island, while a few help with traffic management on Welsh Row.

In the Town Centre, volunteers may help at the information stall, hand out programmes, direct visitors to landmarks like the museum or church, or keep the area litter-free.

On Mill Island, volunteers manage gates and wristbands, assist with crowd control, hand out programmes, and help keep spectators safe as the Sealed Knot’s troops march across the bridge.

Volunteer coordinator Liane Dooley said: “This is a wonderful opportunity to be part of something truly special in Nantwich.

“Our volunteers are the heart of the event — they help create a warm, welcoming atmosphere and make sure everything runs smoothly.

“Whether you love history, enjoy meeting people, or simply want to give back to your community, we’d love to have you on board!”

The day will feature the dramatic battle re-enactment complete with cannon fire, musket volleys, and swordplay, as well as historical displays, food stalls, and family-friendly entertainment throughout the town.
