Crewe Railroaders coach Mark Hamer

American Football team Crewe Railroaders have appointed Mark Hamer as their new head coach.

Hamer, who has been special team coordinator since the start of the season, will continue in this role alongside his new position.

He has almost 30 years experience in the game, starting in the late 80s with the original Crewe Railroaders youth team, the Crewe Missiles.

In his first season in the adult team, Hamer led them to the play offs where Crewe were beaten by Merseyside Centurions.

Hamer, who has played at Tight End, Offensive Line, Nose Tackle, Quarterback and Slot Receiver, later joined the South Cheshire Refugees.

In 1999, he signed for the Chester Romans and they went on to win the Second Division title in his first year.

Hamer continued to play until 2006 when he decided to move into coaching.

He coached the Romans youth team in 2013, with several players going on to represent Great Britain at youth level.

He left there in 2014 Hamer and re-joined Crewe Railroaders for the 2015 season, which has started with one win and two losses.

Now he is hoping he can turn the season around.

“My goal is to ensure that the Crewe Railroaders sustain as a team and are around for many years to come,” he said.

“The aim is to support the committee with a competitive team on the field.

“Of course winning seasons, play-off appearances and winning championships are the ultimate goals.

“There is a great bunch of coaches on board and the players are keen to learn and are hungry for victories.

“This game has been a part of my life for so long now and I can’t imagine myself ever not having involvement in American Football in some capacity.

“I am truly proud to be the Crewe Railroaders Head Coach.”
