Cheshire East admits facing £8.86 million overspend in children’s services

Cheshire East is forecasting an overspend of £8.86 million in children’s services because of soaring placement costs and because it set ‘unrealistic savings’ in the budget.

Finance officer Diane Green told the children and families committee: “Although numbers of children in care are reducing, the cost of placements in 2025/26 has continued to increase, creating an unbudgeted pressure.”

A Nantwich dad is campaigning for increased secondary school capacity in the town after his daughter was declined a place at Brine Leas – just 150 yards from where they live.

Sol Flamberg says his daughter now has to make a 23-mile round trip every day to Sandbach High School – despite her brother being accepted into Brine Leas.

A councillor has objected to the licence renewal for a sex shop which has operated on Nantwich Road in Crewe for 21 years with no complaints.

Cheshire East’s licensing sub-committee was told by the council’s licensing team leader, Kim Evans, that the licence for Temptations Adult Shop was renewed annually and there had never been an objection from anyone previously.

Planning officers have recommended councillors give the go-ahead to convert a former workhouse which later became part of the Barony Hospital, into apartments.

Greenhouse Property Management wants to convert Bevan House, the three-storey listed former workhouse building, and John Snow House, a two-storey separate detached building on the Barony site in Nantwich, into 31 apartments.

Cash-strapped Cheshire East wants residents to complete a ‘budget prioritisation survey’ as the council faces a £33 million funding gap for the next financial year.

Deputy leader Michael Gorman (Wilmslow, Ind) said a report to the corporate policy committee on the budget setting process for revealed, at that point, the funding gap was £33 million without any support from government.
