Willaston councillor calls for taxi law change to safeguard women and children

A Willaston councillor has called on Cheshire East leaders to safeguard women and children by lobbying for a change in the law around taxi drivers licensed elsewhere to operate in the borough.

Cllr Allen Gage says a report published by Baroness Casey last year noted taxis being used as a conduit and method for the systemic and organised rape of young and vulnerable girls across the UK.

A furious opposition councillor has clashed with the council leader after being refused permission to speak at a Cheshire East Council cabinet meeting.

Cllr Liz Wardlaw, deputy leader of the Conservative group on Cheshire East, attended yesterday’s (July 2nd) meeting in Crewe to ask questions about the authority’s finances and the waste strategy.

Councillor questions number of PCSOs in Cheshire after precept rise

A Cheshire councillor has asked why there are only 51 PCSOs across the county when council taxpayers agreed to pay a higher police precept to fund 57.

Last year Cheshire had 87 Police Community Support Officers but the chief constable then announced plans to axe 60 of those roles as part of a cost-cutting measure.

Ward Cllr Margaret Simon and representatives from Wistaston Parish Council vociferously objected to the plans by Harworth Estates at the Cheshire East Council strategic planning board.

A councillor has objected to the licence renewal for a sex shop which has operated on Nantwich Road in Crewe for 21 years with no complaints.

Cheshire East’s licensing sub-committee was told by the council’s licensing team leader, Kim Evans, that the licence for Temptations Adult Shop was renewed annually and there had never been an objection from anyone previously.

Former Bunbury ward councillor Sarah Pochin has been selected by Reform UK as their candidate for the upcoming Runcorn and Helsby by-election.

The former leader of the Liberal Democrat group on Cheshire East Council has quit the party and become the first Reform UK member on the council.

Cllr Reg Kain, elected to Cheshire East Council in May 2023, said he had joined Reform UK “because I believe it is the only mainstream party at this time that is genuinely listening to the concerns and needs of the British people”.
