Cheshire East Council ‘general reserves’ rise to £11.5 million

A councillor has sought assurances that Cheshire East’s £11.5m general reserves would be enough in the event of a crisis because it is lower than most local authorities.

The council increased its general reserves from £10m to £11.5m last year – taking it to 3% of the annual revenue budget.

An advisory panel has been set up to look at future cemetery provision in Cheshire East after a councillor branded the existing strategy “callous” and “ludicrous”.

Cheshire East reviewed the strategy in 2018 and a long term proposal was that families would have to bury loved ones in Crewe or Macclesfield as other local cemeteries became full.

More people will need Cheshire East’s emergency assistance scheme to support their families once the £20 universal credit uplift ends, a councillor has said.
