Cash-strapped Cheshire East Council is applying to the government for permission to increase council tax by up to 9.99% this year, writes Belinda Ryan.
The council is looking at a funding a massive gap of £18.2 million for the 2026/27 financial year.

A councillor has called for a review of the funding formula which sees Cheshire East allocated just a third of the amount some other councils receive for children with special needs.
Cllr Laura Crane, chair of Cheshire East’s children and families committee, is urging all councillors to lobby their MPs to ensure the funding formula is revisited as soon as possible.
Cheshire East Council is set to receive a record funding boost of £77.4 million for fixing roads and potholes.

Cash-strapped Cheshire East wants residents to complete a ‘budget prioritisation survey’ as the council faces a £33 million funding gap for the next financial year.
