Responding to emergency calls should still be the number one priority for police in Cheshire.

That’s one of the key messages from people who took part in a Cheshire Police Authority survey.

Nearly 90 per cent of responses put the issue at the top of the list.

The other “top five” priorities were detecting crime and arresting offenders, tackling violent crime, tackling organized crime and terrorism and targeting drug dealers.

More than 68 per cent of the 1,300 involved in the survey felt Cheshire Constabulary do “an excellent or good job”.

Nearly 70 per cent believed “Cheshire police and local councils are dealing with anti social behaviour and crime issues in the area.” This compared with less than 64 per cent last year.

Issues with a  lower priority included crime prevention advice and tackling community problems such as parking, graffiti and damage.

Many said these issues were a council’s responsibility.

The surveys were conducted in face-to-face street interviews at roadshows across the county, and from focus groups, postal surveys and public meetings.

Margaret Ollerenshaw (pictured), Chairman of Cheshire Police Authority, said: “The priority choices give a good overall picture of what matters to local people.

“They will be considered, alongside the professional views of the police and our partners′ priorities, to set objectives for the police service for the forthcoming year.

“The information means police resources are used on issues which people want tackled. The growing satisfaction with the results seems to indicate it is working.”
