Thousands of drivers were delayed for hours in Cheshire today after the M6 was closed because of a lorry fire.

The truck carrying plastic pallets caught fire on the northbound carriageway near Knutsford.

A bridge over the motorway was also damaged by the fierce blaze, forcing engineers to close the Northwich Road at Tabley.

The northbound was closed from 6am today (October 23) for several hours.

Tailbacks stretched for 10 miles back to the Junction 16 for Nantwich and Crewe.

Fire crews used breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze.

The trailer unit of the lorry has melted as a result of the fire, and crews have managed to move the lorry to a nearby service station sliproad to fully extinguish the fire.

The middle and outside lanes of the M6 have now been reopened, but the inside land and hard shoulder remain closed.

But traffic in the area is at a standstill on many routes and drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible.
