A packed Nantwich Civic Hall welcomed in the new Mayor of Nantwich, Cllr Christine Farrall.

The former headteacher was sworn in as the town council’s new chair, taking over from outgoing mayor Cllr John Lewis.

Cllr Farrall, who has lived in Nantwich for 40 years, went on to name her three charities for her 2014-15 year as Nantwich Museum, Nantwich in Bloom, and Nantwich Players.

She paid tribute to each, saying the Players had a “deserved reputation across the North West” and that Nantwich Museum “acts as a reminder of our years past”.

Of Nantwich in Bloom, she said it was all around working hard to make the town attractive to residents and visitors.

“Long may it continue,” she added.

“All these organisations are run by volunteers who help to make our town attractive and welcoming.”

Cllr Farrall also highlighted the work done by independent traders and market stallholders in the town to attract more people.

“We are fortunate to have these traders working together with schools,  churches and local groups to improve the prosperity of Nantwich.”

Cllr Andrew Martin was also sworn in as Deputy Mayor of the town council, and St Mary’s Church Rev Barry Wilson was named as the council’s official chaplain for 2014-15.

Outgoing mayor Cllr John Lewis presented a cheque for £5,742 to representatives of SSAFA, his mayor’s charity for 2013-14.

Cllr Lewis said: “I must thank my council colleagues, the rector, and the residents of Nantwich for your support over the past year.

“We’ve worked to promote a consensus approach to decision-making at the council, and it has been a very pleasant atmosphere.

“We’ve kept our political issues aside and focused on the needs of the town. That is the most important thing.”
