Crewe CC Vagrants men's 1st team

Crewe Vagrants CC 1sts earned a fine win on the road at Sandyford in North Staffs and South Cheshire League as Rory Kalnins (35) hit 24 off the first over.

Ben Jarvis (10) and the usually aggressive Lew Bacon (22) added a 51 partnership.

Following the run-outs of Cal Meakin (12) and captain Cal Bacon (22) the tail crept to their lowest season’s target so far of 132-8 from 40 overs.

Without injured opening bowler Ollie Jarvis, the depleted attack was sure to have its work cut out.

But Sandyford early batters fell to superb bowling from Faisir Mahmood (3-12), captain Cal (1-21), and Rory Kalnins (2-25).

At 62 for 6 the game was leaning Crewe’s way, but Kalhara Senarathne (35) and Rory Smith (17) steered the home side to 100 for 6 and with eight overs left.

Crewe’s top wicket-taker Ben Jarvis swiftly swung the pendulum back in Crewe’s favour with 3 for 24 at the death. Lew Bacon ended Sandyford’s innings with a run-out and the hosts 11 runs short.

However, there was disappointment in the Talbot Shield quarter-final as the 1sts lost at Cheadle.

Winning the toss and deciding to bat, Crewe lost their first four batters for 35 runs, only Rory Kalkins (14) gaining double figures.

The Cheadle attack was led by James Jackson (3-11) as Crewe batters regularly succumbed.

Lewis Bacon (23) and brother and skipper Cal (20) showed some resistance.

Cal Meakin added another 11, but the 99 all out total was never going to be enough.

Cheadle’s opener Ryan Day (27) was top scorer of the day, but the hosts were reduced to 40-3 by Crewe.

But Sam Rushton (23NO) saw the game to its expected result with five wickets in hand.

Crewe Vagrants 2nds also earned a fine league win at home to previously unbeaten Porthill Park.

Pun Nidamanuri hit 26 and Piers Stockton 43. Frazier Hoye added 31. Despite Porthill’s main bowlers B Magiban (3-33) and O McKeown also 3-33, Max Gay (16) and the aggressive Haveesh Alluri (34) were able to continue the theme to reach an impressive 191 at tea.

The visitors were unable to settle into any rhythm thanks to two opening economic spells from Jon Minshull (2-15) and Haveesh (1-9).

Only J Riley (22) and B Magiban offered any resistance to the shared bowling success of Frazier Hoye (2-29) and particularly good performances from promising young Andy Whittingham (2-11) and younger leg spinner Harry Wynn-Hughes (2-4), and the match ended with Porthill Park a ‘nelson’ short.

Crewe Ladies softball team beat Haslington by 17 runs in a tight contest.

Ailsa Meakin and Claire Standley led the way hitting a number of boundaries, and they added net 32 and 14 respectively to the total.

Lisa Taylor’s 13 added to the score and Crewe finished on net 108.

In reply, Haslington’s first two batting pairs scored steadily and at the half way stage were ahead of the required rate.

A low catch by Rosie Meakin off Lisa Taylor’s bowling stemmed the tide and Haslington’s final pair needed 30 to win off the final four overs.

But Crewe hit back with tight bowling, a hit wicket and a run out.

Then a one-handed running catch by Nicki Jarvis on the boundary off Nerys Oates’ bowling knocked Haslington back and they finished 17 runs short.
