e-bike confiscated by cheshire police in crewe

A senior Nantwich officer has pledged to pursue those continuing to ride e-bikes and e-scooters illegally in the town.

Sgt Matt Stonier told town councillors it was one of their priorities as he updated the council on latest policing in the community.

It follows an incident earlier this month in which a 59-year-old pedestrian suffered serious injuries when in collision with a man riding an e-bike.

The rider of the e-bike, a 20-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Sgt Stonier said: “The problem of e-bikes and scooters is a huge issue nationally.

“It ramped up over the summer and we thought we were making good headway. The shocking incident in September in which a man was knocked over by a 20-year-old on an e-bike has brought it into sharper focus.

“It was a really serious incident causing serious injury through dangerous driving.

“Since that case we have not had a single report of e-bikes, and hopefully the coverage of that incident has hit a few people.

“Maybe parents have taken a stronger approach.

“But we are mindful from the community to be active on tackling e-bikes and illegal scooters.

“We’re hearing that and we are very much continuing to be active on this issue.”

Sgt Stonier also highlighted the drop in reported incidents in August this compared to 2024.

His officers responded to around 424 incidents across all Nantwich wards in August, a drop from 495 in August last year.

He said there were no specific crime patterns ongoing.

Sgt Stonier also hailed the success of the “Cops on the Square” initiative in Nantwich town centre, where officers will be present each Saturday between 10am and 2pm to talk to residents.

He said the initiative is now being rolled out across other towns by Cheshire Police.
