The Battle of Nantwich took place on January 25th 1644, during the English Civil War (1642–1646).
The Parliamentarians, led by Sir Thomas Fairfax, relieved the town of Nantwich, which had been under siege by Royalist forces.
The battle, fought near Acton, ended in a Parliamentarian victory with many Royalist officers surrendering or being captured at Acton Church.
The victory was celebrated with the wearing of holly sprigs in hair and hats, a tradition that continues today as part of the Holly Holy Day festivities.
Stephan Davies, a representative of St Mary’s Acton, said: “We very much enjoy being part of the Holly Holy Day commemorations.
“The Battle of Nantwich is a pivotal chapter in our local history, and we’re proud to share the story of Acton – and the role the church had to play.
“Whether you’re a history enthusiast or just looking for a warm, welcoming place to spend the morning, we invite you to join us.”
There is no fixed admission fee, donations are welcome to support the church’s ongoing work and preservation.
