Connor Naismith - Labour councillor and MP candidate

Crewe and Nantwich MP Connor Naismith says he and his staff were “harassed, intimidated and abused” last night after high profile police raids on a religious group in Crewe.

Nine people were arrested by police yesterday investigating serious offences at the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light, based at Webb House in Crewe.

It follows allegations of serious sexual offences, forced marriage and modern slavery, reported to have taken place in 2023 against one female victim.

Other properties in Crewe were searched and six men and three women from various nationalities were arrested.

Large groups gathered outside the main police custody suite in Middlewich last night where those arrested were being held and questioned.

Mr Naismith says he and his employees were targeted as they tried to give media interviews in the town.

He posted on social media: “This evening, while attempting to carry out my duties as the Member of Parliament, to do media interviews to give more information about the situation at Webb House, my staff and I were followed and subjected to serious harassment, abuse and intimidation which prompted the involvement of the police.

“I love this job. It is the honour of my life to represent this community. Whatever disagreements we may have, I know I can say that I am working my hardest to do a good job for this area.

“Whether at work or not, I should be able to walk the streets in the community I call home without individuals, some of whom have travelled to Crewe to inflame tensions, screaming at me and my staff in the street.

“I want to express sincere thanks to Cheshire Police for the work they have done all day today in very difficult circumstances and for their efforts to keep me safe.

“I won’t be silenced or intimidated out of doing the job the people of Crewe and Nantwich elected me to do.”

However, reaction to his posts was mixed, with many blaming Labour and politicians for the current tensions across the UK.
