Cheshire East backs scheme to pay pregnant women to quit smoking

Cheshire East Council is going ahead with a pilot scheme to pay pregnant women to quit smoking.

The women will be paid a total of £400 – over six instalments – and other smokers in their household will be paid £200 to give up.

A strike by Arriva employees is expected to severely disrupt bus services in Cheshire East and the wider North West region from tomorrow (July 20).

Arriva bus drivers and support staff who are members of GMB and Unite unions will begin strike action from 2am on July 20.

The comments came at a meeting of the council’s corporate policy committee meeting on where councillors were discussing a review of the appointment to outside bodies.

Cheshire East has secured more funds towards the Gypsy and Traveller site at Middlewich and hopes to begin the tendering process for construction soon.

Planning permission was granted last August for the site to be developed on land off Cledford Lane.

Funding approved for new Nantwich skate park at Barony

Nantwich looks set to get a new skate park facility on the Barony after the project received a £100,000 grant from FCC Communities Foundation.

The money will be used to create a multi-wheeled sports facility which will allow skateboarders, scooters, roller skaters and other park users access to an enormously improved facility at Barony Park.

Cheshire East is employing experts to review its schools catering service after it made a loss of more than £95,000 in 2021-22.

The service currently provides meals for 92 schools across the borough – this includes 86 primary, four special schools, one secondary and a pupil referral unit.

Cheshire East’s Conservative group leader says she is pleased Boris Johnson has resigned but is disappointed he will continue until a new leader is selected.

Mr Johnson spoke to the nation from outside Downing Street at 12.30pm today (July 7) saying it is clearly the will of the Parliamentary Conservative Party that there should be a new party leader and therefore a new prime minister.

Census 2021 results show Cheshire East’s population has risen by almost 30,000 since the previous survey in 2011.

In total, 98% of Cheshire East population completed the 2021 Census, higher than the 97% national average.
